Algae is a surprising yet effective ingredient in skincare products. With more people being open to using natural products, the use of algae in skincare products is gaining popularity.
What exactly is algae?
Algae is an aquatic organism that is found in oceans. They are different from other plants and animals as their cells have unique features that are not found in other plants. They produce oxygen and are a source of food for many ocean animals. Algae is classified into three types: red, brown, and green algae. The different colors of algae are due to the way chloroplast is reflected.
Green Algae
Ulvans found in green algae have antioxidant properties and it has anti-skin aging properties.
Red Algae
Porphyrtan found in red algae offers effective treatment for skin inflammation. Carrageenan, another compound found in red algae, can also be used as an antioxidant and has anti-skin aging properties
Brown Algae
The main polysaccharides found in brown algae are called fucoidans. This polysaccharide delivers a wide range of skincare benefits, including skin anti-aging, preventing dermatitis, and moisturizing, and there is evidence that shows that it has skin cancer-preventing agents.
